Repeated Recent Outbreaks of Bird Flu

There have been repeated and recurrent outbreaks of "Bird Flu"  especially throughout Asia and the Middle East.

Israel , Egypt Pakistan and Burma have joined the list of recent outbreaks of the H5N1 strain.

How the Avian Flu is spread often is a mystery.  Spread can be along fly lines of migrating birds - yet this does not always provide and explanation or explanations.

First actions are usually a culling of bird populations in a given area.  These can be chicken , turkey and other fowl .  However such bird populations as ducks, geese and even household pets such as parrots and parakeets may also be culled as part of the process .  All it takes is one bacteria , or in this case , virus , so to speak.  Education and awareness , both in the general public as well as in veterinary and veterinary support staff , both in public government and private practice positions are the norm.

In a recent case in Israel , a kindergarten teacher noted the death of  a dozen chickens at a child's petting zoo.    Swift action was taken  with the culling of all poultry and birds in a full two mile radius.  In this case overall there was little chance of transmission of the H5N1 virus to human beings.

All in all the recent outbreaks of bird flu over wider and larger geographic regions is of major concern both to epidemiologists as well as health care and veterinary staff involved in diagnosis , treatment and prevention of the H5NU Bird Flu.
