Treatment of Lyme Disease

While it is nice to think of Lyme Disease as  a very simple disease that if caught early on , and given antibiotics that all if fine.

This is not always the case.  Again and again several points come up

                   1) Prevention is key - best not to get infected with Lyme disease in the first place

                  2)  The earlier the antibiotic is given to the patient the far better chance the patient has of less complications

If the patients Lyme disease is serious orthopedic joint surgery may be indicated and required.   If heart problems are an issue - a pacemaker may be needed to be installed either on a temporary or permanent basis.

Antibiotic therapy must be given as early as possible to avoid these long term health problems.  The antibiotic can often and usually be given by mouth - that is orally.   Sometimes however the antibiotic can only given by injection - parentally.   People treated in the early stages with these medications usually find that the rash involved often fades away faster indeed promptly.  The joint - arthritis symptoms usually dissipate within several week .   However several months duration of the arthritis symptoms is not unusual,

Standard antibiotic therapy - even by mouth , is not side effect free.  Many people complain and experience muscle aches  as well as proble3ms with concentration and persistent fatigue.

Whether this is a result of the Lyme Disease or a side effect of the antibiotic therapy or both , is currently unknown and undetermined.

The question is often asked in regards to the aches and pain of Lyme Disease as to whether pain relievers are of help.  After all Lyme Disease is a form of arthritis .  Aspirin (A.S.A.) and non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs form the basis of most arthritis drug therapy.

Overall pain relievers do not help with the Lyme Disease treatment.  However these pain relievers may relieve some of the symptoms associated with Lyme Disease symptoms

             Medications often tried include

               Tylenol ( acetaminophen)

Non steroidal anti inflammatory including aspirin  , naprosyn and ibuprofen ( Advil)
