Origins of the Descriptive Name of the Disease called " Morgellons Disease"
Morgellons Disease was first described as "Morgellons Disease" in 2001 by a concerned Pennsylvania mother while trying to have her son's persistent rash diagnosed and treated.
This persistent mother had had her son's rash described and diagnosed as simple "eczema" 12 times even though the mother had come to be dubious of the diagnosis.
A different syndrome refereed to as Morgellons had previously been described and noted in earlier medical history. The critical noted similarity was that the patients so described "break out with harsh hairs on their back".
A medical report published and dated in the year of 1936 by British Medical Physician C. Kirk Kellett identifies the name " Morgellons" with the Provencal term "mascious" or "little flies"
This 17th century description may or may not have anything to do with the modern descriptive term of "Morgellons Disease". Whether it is similarity , serendipity or unrelated is not known or ascertainable.
However the name "Morgellons Disease" and the symptoms live on. in our lifetime and medical experiences. both as patients and care givers.
